GOV. MILLS TRIES TO QUIETLY INCREASE MAINE’S SPENDING LIMIT

In case you missed it yesterday, Representative Jack Ducharme penned an op-ed to the Bangor Daily News where he shined a light on Governor Mills’ latest two-year budget proposal that is currently being discussed by the Legislature.

Several weeks ago, we told you that Governor MIlls proposed a whopping $10.3 billion two-year budget. Not only did this budget spend $1 billion more than the previous two-year budget passed in 2021, but it also changes Maine’s statutory spending limit.

Conveniently, the new statutory spending limit is changed to EXACTLY what Governor Mills’ proposed two-year budget plans to spend.

In 2005, Governor Baldacci signed bipartisan legislation which limited state spending growth, set targets to reduce the tax burden, and established the Maine Budget Stabilization Fund. The purpose of the law was to limit out-of-control government spending, provide tax relief, and ensure that education funding remained a top priority. This legislation received bipartisan support. Even then-Representative Janet Mills supported the measure.

Why, then, would she propose to change the statutory spending limit?

Maine families set family budgets and spending limits. Politicians in Augusta should do the same.

Instead of failing to make the tough decisions necessary to maintain some semblance of fiscal sanity, the current administration is on a historic spending spree.
