MPBP STATEMENT ON OBAMACARE RULING
WEST ENFIELD – The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the individual mandate component of Obamacare as a “tax” comes as a huge disappointment.
During the debate leading up to passage of Obamacare, the people of Maine and our nation were promised by supporters of Obamacare, even the President himself, that the mandate was not a tax. Ironically, it was the President’s counsel in the Supreme Court arguments who argued and won on the basis that the mandate was in fact a tax, one that hits middle-income families the hardest.
It is now clear that the President of the United States rose to office and passed the massive government overreach that is Obamacare by misleading the American people and telling them he would not raise taxes, even as he prepared, supported, signed and defended policy that he fully knew was, and planned to argue as, a tax increase.
The tax hikes contained within Obamacare, now affirmed by the US Supreme Court, represent a clear and present threat to freedom and prosperity for our state and nation.
The Supreme Court upholding that the federal government can force Americans to participate in commerce through the threat of taxation is a direct attack on liberty, an open assault on free enterprise and an affront to the spirit of the founding of our nation.
We strongly urge our members and the people of Maine to support full repeal of Obamacare; to seek out opportunities to urge their representatives in Congress to repeal this anti-freedom, anti-growth government overreach and to learn the positions of Congressional candidates in the upcoming election so they can make an informed decision about the future of our state and country in regard to this critical issue.
